The Agency Gap: Designing AI That Survives Production

Abstract

AI agents dominate conference stages, product announcements, and LinkedIn feeds. Yet in most enterprises, the real challenge isn't autonomous decision-making. It's automating business processes reliably. Drawing on real-world examples from insurance, this session cuts through the hype to explore where agentic AI genuinely creates value, where it introduces unnecessary complexity, and why governance, explainability, and human oversight remain essential. Much of today's enterprise value still comes from something far less glamorous: deterministic automation, tightly controlled workflows, and incremental adoption. We'll examine the practical trade-offs between autonomy and control, and what it takes for AI to survive beyond the demo.
